South Coast Region Natural Disaster Program

The South Coast Region Natural Disaster Program delivered critical emergency works across the Gold Coast Hinterland, restoring damaged transport infrastructure and re-establishing safe, reliable access following widespread landslips and landslides caused by severe weather events in 2022.

Awarded as an accelerated emergency response contract by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in April 2022, McIlwain rapidly mobilised resources to undertake remediation works across multiple sites in Lower Beechmont, Neranwood and Lamington National Park. The program included slope stabilisation, embankment reconstruction, drainage upgrades, deep excavations, concreting works and pavement restoration, with full road closures implemented where required to enable the safe and efficient delivery of the works. The scope comprised three sites on Beechmont Road, 47 sites along Gold Coast–Springbrook Road, and four sites on Lamington National Park Road. Delivered within challenging terrain and environmentally sensitive areas, the program improved the long-term stability and resilience of key transport corridors, enhancing safety, supporting regional connectivity and reducing the impact of future weather events on local communities and road users.
