Tourle St and Cormorant Road Duplication

Working as part of a joint venture, McIlwain helped deliver the Tourle Street and Cormorant Road Duplication, a major transport upgrade that improved capacity, reliability and access to one of the Hunter region's most significant industrial corridors.

Kooragang Island is a major industrial and employment precinct supporting the world’s largest coal export port. Prior to the upgrade, the corridor’s limited capacity contributed to growing congestion for the approximately 33,000 vehicles using the route each day. The project involved major bridge and roadway construction works, including installation of large Super-T girders, substructure construction in highly contaminated ground conditions, and treatment of soft alluvial soils through pre-load embankments. Environmental management was a key priority, with extensive controls implemented to protect mangroves, manage contaminated materials and safeguard threatened species habitat. Complex staging and traffic management arrangements enabled continuous access for industrial operators, freight movements and commuters while maintaining safety and compliance with RMS requirements. The completed upgrade has significantly improved network capacity, travel reliability and long-term connectivity for the region.
