Binna Burra Bushfire Recovery Works

Emergency stabilisation works along Binna Burra Road restored access to a vital mountain corridor following the 2019 Southern Queensland Bushfires, improving safety and resilience for residents, businesses and visitors.

Awarded in October 2019 under a First Response Emergency Works (FREW) contract, the remediation works addressed extensive geotechnical damage caused by the bushfires. Initially comprising two sites, detailed investigations identified additional instability, expanding the program to 28 locations, including 21 major and seven minor treatment areas. Delivery was undertaken within a highly constrained environment characterised by steep terrain, narrow road formations and proximity to the heritage-listed Binna Burra Lodge. Working collaboratively with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, McIlwain refined reinforcement methodologies and construction techniques throughout the project, enabling adaptive solutions that responded to changing site conditions. The works were delivered under strict safety controls and accelerated timeframes to reinstate reliable access for the local community as quickly as possible.
