Transurban Queensland engaged McIlwain to rectify the splice plate connections and other identified defects on 50 Large Traffic Management Sign (LTMS) structures in the Clem Jones Tunnel, AirportLink M7 tunnel and surrounding local roads.

Check/tighten/replace bolts on 50 large Traffic Management Signs (LTMS) splice plate connections
Rectify all CS3 and CS4 defects identified in the supplied Level 2 inspection reports and reinstate back to CS2
Undertake minor repairs to protective coat-ings as identified and provide Level 2 con-dition reports upon completion to confirm the condition of the assets is CS2 or better
Signage support minor rectifications such as bolt replacement
Traffic Management – tunnel closures, mul-ti-lane, working adjacent live traffic, ramp closures, coordination between tunnel op-erations required extensive planning and consultation as the tunnels were run 

The rectification work included replacement and tensioning of structural bolts, and insertion of shims where necessary. The work also included minor repairs to the gantries, such as repairing damaged galvanizing.

A major constraint for this project was that all works in the Clem Jones Tunnel and AirportLink M7 tunnel had to be undertaken during planned tunnel closures.

This added a high degree of complexity to scheduling the works for the project and special attention to ensure that works were carried out as programmed, as any slippages could result in significant delays to delivering the project by having to wait until the next closure.

Furthermore, the lack of, and inaccuracy of, information on the structures meant contingency planning on supply of materials and tooling was essential. The project was delivered early and under budget, with extremely positive feedback received from Transurban regarding planning, quality and safety outcomes of the project team.
