Splice Plates Defect Repair

McIlwain rectified structural defects on 50 large traffic management sign (LTMS) structures across the Clem Jones Tunnel, AirportLink M7 tunnel, and surrounding approaches, restoring structural integrity while maintaining safe operation of high-volume urban roadways.

The works were constrained by live tunnel environments and planned closures, requiring precise scheduling, extensive traffic management, and contingency planning due to incomplete structural information. All works were delivered ahead of schedule and under budget, with positive feedback from the client for planning, quality and safety outcomes.

Project Scope

  • Inspect, check, tighten, and replace bolts on 50 LTMS splice plate connections
  • Rectify all CS3 and CS4 defects to achieve CS2 condition
  • Minor repairs to protective coatings and galvanizing
